Modern Tribe “Groove On” (US UJC CD)
“This ain’t no jazz album.
What it is, is the best soul project the Scales posse have ever produced. Well, I suppose it’s a bit jazzy, but only in the way that classic Philly or Chapter 8 or Phyllis Hyman are a bit jazzy. The best of post sixties soul has often contained elements of musical sophistication beyond the three cord blues/gospel construction, but are not, in any real way, improvisational. This album has more in common with the best works of Norman Conners, Dexter Wansel or Webster Lewis than Monk, Bird, or Dizz but, hey, I’m not complaining, I quite like soul music. OK, there’s a couple of tedious Jazz FM-style wall covering jobs but the vast majority of the tracks on this set are just gonna make the sophistomonsters of the modern soul scene just beam and beam.”
