Out of the urban jungle emerges the "Modern Tribe;" a multicultural, multitalented blend of musical energy to delight your senses. Spearheaded by simmering, sizzling sounds of keyboards, percussions, drums, sax, guitar, and vocals, Modern Tribe pulsates to the sound of a different beat.

  Modern Tribe's matriarch is Gwen Scales, whose sultry, powerful vocals complement the vibrant tones of the keyboard talent of Tribe's patriarch, Charles Scales.

   Gwen Scales won her first talent contest at ten.  This early success fueled her desire to sing and entertain. More recently, she has been honored with one of Detroit's most prestigious awards, "Best Jazz Vocalist."

   The jazz and R & B influences in her vocal interpretations can be attributed to the countless hours spent listening to her father's old recordings of Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Aretha Franklin and numerous other vocal and instrumental artists.

   Charles Scales' experience with music began with piano lessons at the age of nine. Performing with bands throughout his high school and college years, Charles earned a degree in composition and arranging from The University of Michigan. With extensive experience in production, arranging, and live performance, Charles gives credit to several artists who fueled his desire to play, including Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Ramsey Lewis, and Joe Sample.

   Ray Manzerolle, on the sax, the "Jazz Historian" of the group is a widely sought after musician. Featured on at least six of Earl Klugh's albums, Gene Dunlap, Oleta Adams and others, Ray has entertained audiences worldwide. His earthy approach and minimalist styling add to the melodic presence of the Tribe.

   Melvin "Max" Maxwell, the Tribe's percussionist, brings a dynamic energy to the music, incorporating African and Brazilian poly rhythms into each song. He is also quite capable of lending a harmonious blend with his vocal stylings to the sound of the Modern Tribe.

   The heart and soul of an artist is not easily measured, but when this tribe unites, they create a simmering brew of musical energy that will delight the senses. It is obvious they have a passion for their music that knows no bounds.  So, sit back, relax, and groove to the vibe of the "Modern Tribe."
